Note: As a JAVAPRO author, please read the following copyright guidelines carefully.
Our author agreement indicates that you as an author may only use content that you have created and for which you therefore own the copyright. To ensure the legal integrity of our magazine (both print and online), please adhere to the following copyright guidelines when submitting your articles.
Content You Must Not Use (Copyright Infringement Risks):
Complete Articles Not Personally Written:
- This includes any text copied verbatim or substantially from other sources (websites, blogs, books, journals, etc.) without explicit permission from the copyright holder.
Graphics and Illustrations Not Personally Created:
- This includes any visual content (images, diagrams, charts, etc.) copied from other sources (websites, blogs, books, journals, etc.) without explicit permission.
- This applies even if you have modified the original graphic or illustration.
Graphics and Illustrations Containing Copied Elements:
- Even if you create a new graphic or illustration, you cannot incorporate any copyrighted elements from other sources without permission.
Licensed Stock Photos (Unless Specifically Authorized):
- While stock photos are available for purchase, they are often subject to specific licensing terms. You may not use licensed stock photos, even if you have licensed a photo because sublicensing to JAVAPRO is usually not allowed unless the magazine has expressly permitted it. The only exception is using photos from Envato Elements for which we have a subscription.
Any other copyrighted material that you do not have written permission to use.
Copyrighted material that falls under “fair use” or “fair dealing”. These concepts are very nuanced, and it is better to avoid them altogether.
Content You May Use (Permissible Content):
Original Content:
- Text, graphics, and illustrations that you have personally created and for which you hold the full copyright.
Screenshots of Software Applications:
- Screenshots of software applications are generally permissible for illustrative purposes, especially when demonstrating software functionality. However, avoid using screenshots that contain copyrighted content from third parties (e.g., icons, logos) without permission.
Code Snippets:
- Code snippets can be used for illustrative purposes, especially if properly attributed. Very long code segments may need permission, but we’ve never had that.
Creative Commons Licensed Content:
- Content released under a Creative Commons license that allows for the specific use you intend (e.g., attribution, non-commercial, share-alike). You must comply with the terms of the license and provide proper attribution.
- Here is the link: https://creativecommons.org/share-your-work/cclicenses/
Royalty Free Photos from Approved Image Providers:
- Royalty free content from our regularly used and approved image providers, such as Pixabay, Unsplash, Wikipedia, and Wikimedia Commons. Please, include the direct link to the photo at the end of your article.
We therefore ask you to double-check your articles. If you use any graphics or illustrations, you are unsure about, replace them with something from a trusted source above. Graphics and illustrations can often be quickly recreated with little effort. If necessary, avoid using the dubious graphics.
Thank You!
